Hunting Cape Buffalo in Namibia

Pedro Ampuero travelled to the Caprivi Strip in Namibia for one of the most demanding hunts of his career: tracking Cape buffalo with his 76-year-old father. Facing one of Africa’s most dangerous animals together was a test of patience, nerve, and trust, an experience that became less about the shot and more about the journey.

What Makes Cape Buffalo Hunting In Namibia So Challenging?

The Cape buffalo’s reputation for toughness is well earned. Days of glassing and tracking through heavy brush kept Pedro and his father on edge as herds moved in and out of sight across the floodplains. Hippos, elephants, and unforgiving terrain reminded them that this corner of Africa is as wild as it gets.

Opportunities came and went, with long hours judging horn age and trophy quality before closing in. At 180 yards, Pedro finally had his chance. Supported on SpringBok Quad Sticks, he made the shot count.

Why Hunt Dangerous Game with Family?

For Pedro, this hunt was about more than dangerous game. Sharing the experience with his father gave the trip its meaning. At 76 years old, he was there for every stalk, every decision, and every tense moment leading up to the shot. Hunting Cape buffalo became a way to share time together in one of the most challenging environments on earth.

What Lessons Come From a Cape Buffalo Hunt?

Hunting Cape buffalo is never simple. Long tracking days, close encounters with other wildlife, and the tension of facing an animal built for survival make it one of Africa’s greatest challenges. For Pedro, the real trophy was sharing it all with his father, a reminder that hunting is as much about people as it is about game.
