Tahr Hunting in New Zealand

Tahr Hunting in New Zealand

Deep in the Southern Alps of New Zealand, Pedro Ampuero and his wife Victoria set off into some of the most dramatic terrain on the planet in pursuit of a truly iconic species: The Himalayan tahr.

This time, it wasn’t Pedro behind the rifle. Victoria led the charge, and the hunt quickly became something far more meaningful than just a tag to fill. From the steep climbs to the remote glassing points high above the valleys, the Southern Alps threw everything at them, snow, scree, distance. Nothing came easily. But that’s mountain hunting.

As they pushed deeper into the backcountry, they finally spotted a mature bull tahr up high in the mountains. A careful approach followed, methodical, slow, and silent. When the opportunity finally came, Victoria settled behind the rifle and made it count with the help of our Javelin Pro Hunt Tac Bipod®. The shot was clean, the recovery was emotional.

Then came a twist neither of them expected, a coincidence so wild, it gave the moment even more weight. It’s the kind of thing that makes a great hunt unforgettable.
